5 Benefits of Following a Vegan Diet

Vegan Health Benefits | XL Health Blog

A vegan is someone who does not eat any foods of animal origin. This includes meat, milk, eggs and even honey.  Veganism is as much of philosophy as a dietary choice. Here are 5 vegan health benefits.

Decreases chances of cardiovascular disease

Meat contains a lot of saturated fat, particularly red meat such as beef. Dairy products like eggs and milk also have saturated fats. Excessive consumption of saturated fats can lead to elevated blood pressure and higher cholesterol levels which can contribute to cardiovascular disease.

Cancer prevention

Western cultures have much higher incidences of certain types of cancers including breast, colon and prostate cancer than many eastern cultures. Some researchers attribute this phenomenon to the meat based western diet. Many eastern cultures have more of a plant based and vegan-like diet. One of the vegan health benefits is a diet that may reduce your chance of getting cancer. Some studies have shown that people who have cancer and begin eating a vegan diet may reverse their cancer.

Contributes to healthy body weight

People who follow a vegan diet generally seem to have an easier time maintaining a healthy body weight and body mass index. Vegans consume mostly fruits, vegetables and plant based proteins. Many of the foods that can cause people to gain weight, such as processed foods and red meat, are not eaten by vegans.

Can help prevent eye diseases

Vegans consume a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. Much of this produce is high in anti-oxidants. This type of diet can help to prevent certain types of eye diseases including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

Healthy appearance

Your diet can frequently impact your appearance. People who are vegans may have better skin, including less acme, and stronger nails than non-vegans.

Being a vegan is a lifestyle choice. Some vegan health benefits can include decreased chance for cardiovascular disease, lower cancer risk, healthier body weight, eye disease prevention and better skin and nails.
